Community Gardens

Did you know that the City of St. James has a community garden? The City of St. James has offered a space for a community garden for many years. In the past, it has been volunteer-driven and through word by mouth. More recently, the City has been begun to market the community garden to try and increase participation!

The community garden is located on 2nd Ave South (west of the water treatment plant). It is approximately 30 feet by 60 feet. You can garden from April 15 to October 15. With a fee of $20, you will receive a dedicated plot of land where you can plant your favorite fruits and vegetables. A water spigot is provided by the City and tillage is done in the spring. If your plot is cleaned up at the end of the season, you will receive $10 back as a refundable deposit. Gardeners are solely responsible for the planting and management of their own plots, including providing their own seeds, plants, and tools.

There will be an informational meeting on April 12 at 5:30pm at the Community Building (505 1st Ave S) to discuss the responsibilities of being a gardener and to discuss dividing the plots. You can put up an application to participate in the Community Garden for the 2023 season at the informational meeting or at the St. James City Hall. For more information or any questions, contact Brianna Sanders, EDA Director, at 507-375-1289.
